Welcome

Patrick Gerard Traynor I recently defended my PhD in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Penn State University. I remain a member of the Systems and Internet Infrastructure Security (SIIS) Lab and the Networking and Security Research Center (NSRC). My dissertation was co-advised by Dr. Tom La Porta and Dr. Patrick McDaniel.

My research focuses on security in cellular networks. Specifically, I have investigated the problems that arise when such systems are interconnected with the Internet. Through this research, we have discovered that fundamental differences in systems architecture cause cellular networks to fail at traffic loads far below capacity. My work on this topic has been published at USENIX Security, ACM Mobicom and ACM CCS. My first paper on this topic, "Exploiting Open Functionality in SMS-Capable Cellular Networks", was also featured in the New York Times and is available here and here. I have also written a book on these issues.

My research interests are broad and have thus far included attribute-based cryptography, key management, sensor networks, group mobility and electronic voting. In general, I am interested in learning about how secure systems are designed, constructed and broken.

I will be joining the School of Computer Science in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech as an Assistant Professor in the Fall.
