My research work is at the intersection of the broad topics - Medical Informatics, Data mining, Data Warehousing, Privacy.

Description:

My research started with work on an analytical platform for cancer informatics as part of PCABC (Pennsylvania Cancer Alliance for Bioinformatics Consortium). The system serves as an information-fusion based data analysis and information visualization platform through a suite of tools.

  • Information Fusion based Data Mining : Implemented a clustering algorithm that uses multiple information sources simultaneously to cluster data. The method provides better clustering results than when compared to traditional clustering algorithms using one information source at a time.
  • Information Visualization : Implemented a multidimensional cube based information retrieval and visualization system to enable data exploration. The method allows users to query the data warehouse based on the multidimensional data model and visualize the results with respect to information-of-interest.

The initial stage of this work is reported in [8] and was later extended and reported in [7] and [6]. A comprehensive and more technical version of this is to be submitted under review for the Journal of American Medical Informatics (JAMIA) as in [4].

I have also recently worked on addressing data privacy problems. More specifically, I concentrate on Healthcare privacy.

  • A large section of current anonymization schemes are vulnerable when an adversary uses auxiliary information to inflict a privacy breach. Auxiliary information can be gathered from multiple sources, including 1. Explicit identifying information present in the anonymized data 2. Independent anonymized releases from other sources. My recent work [1,2] shed light on the shortcomings of existing schemes in view of such auxiliary information and discuss alternative solutions.
  • My proposal on privacy policy enforcement in distributed healthcare setting was accepted for MEDINFO 2007 [3].
