Course objectives and syllabus
This is a graduate seminar course on Storage Systems. We will study several aspects of storage systems, mostly from the systems perspective. Tentative topics include: characteristics and history of various hardware devices, historical and emerging technological trends such as Flash and MEMS-based devices, fundamental theoretical results on storage, disk scheduling and data placement, disk arrays, modeling of storage systems, QoS considerations such as those in multimedia systems, file systems, parallel and distributed file systems, fault tolerace and reliability issues, distributed storage, caching and hoarding, content-addressable storage, secure and archival storage systems, storage in sensor networks.
