Biography:

Sumit is a first year graduate student in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at Penn State. He works with Dr. Prasenjit Mitra and Dr. C. Lee Giles. Before joining Penn State in Fall 2008, he completed his undergraduate education in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.

Sumit is interested in broad fields of Information Retrieval and Extraction. He is also interested in Machine Learning, Data Mining and has also worked in Image Processing in the past.

At present, as a Research Assistant in the ChemXSeer project, he is responsible for developing the Figure Search functionality for the ChemXSeer digital library. Figures are used for a variety of purposes in scientific literature  like reporting and summarizing experimental results, describing system architectures and so on. Thus, the capability to search for theses figures brings all this information at the fingertips of researchers. In addition to the search facility, he is also working on the problem of automatically extracting informative synopses describing the figures from the documents.
