Biography:

Sumit is a Phd candidate in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at Penn State. He works with Dr. Prasenjit Mitra and Dr. C. Lee Giles. Before joining Penn State in Fall 2008, he completed his undergraduate education in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.

His research interests lie in broad fields of Information Retrieval and Extraction. He is also interested in Machine Learning, Data Mining and has also worked in Image Processing in the past.

At present, as a Research Assistant in the CiteSeerX project, he is responsible for developing the Figure Search and Algorithm search functionality for CiteSeerX. Algorithms are an integral part of CS literature and figures are used for a variety of purposes in scientific literature  like reporting and summarizing experimental results, describing system architectures and so on. Thus, the capability to search for theses figures and algorithms brings all this information at the fingertips of researchers. In addition to the search facility, he is also working on the problem of automatically extracting informative synopses describing the figures from the documents.
