Biography
William Higgins received his B.S. from MIT and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois (all degrees in electrical engineering). He was a principal research scientist at the Honeywell Systems and Research Center, Minneapolis, MN from 1984-1987. From 1987-1989, he was a principal research fellow at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Since 1989, he has been a professor in the Electrical Engineering (EE) Department of Penn State. He is also affiliated with the Computer Science and Engineering Department (CSE) and the Bioengineering program.
Dr. Higgins Multidimensional Image Processing Laboratory efforts have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Whitaker Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. The laboratory has developed several interactive software systems for 3D image processing and visualization. His group has also done much fundamental work in the areas of virtual endoscopy, 3D image segmentation, texture analysis, mathematical morphology, edge detection, dynamic volume rendering, and 3D image interpolation. He is a fellow of the IEEE.
