Biography
Dr. Fonseca finished his Ph.D. in 2001 in the Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering at the University of Maine. Since then, he has worked in three areas of research, geographic information science, information science, and information systems. His work is based on ontologies; theories that explain the world. His work on ontology-driven geographic information systems has been highly influential in the area as shown by a recent research award and by a total of more than 300 hundred citations according to Google Scholar. Dr. Fonseca received the 2006 Researcher Award by the University Consortium of Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) for the foundational work on ontologies in GIS.
Dr. Fonseca's work in information science addresses both philosophic and epistemological foundations of ontologies. Results to date include three papers in a flagship journal and a fellowship with a prominent NSF-funded research center, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to work in the development of an ontology layer on top of the center's research efforts on information gathering using geospatial electronic records. His work in the information systems area focuses on the use of ontologies in IS under a philosophical perspective.
