Bhuvan Urgaonkar
- Co-Director: Computer Systems Lab (CSL)
- Assistant Professor
University Park, PA 16802
Education:
- Ph.D., University of Massachusetts Amherst
Biography:
Bhuvan Urgaonkar received his B.Tech (honors) in computer science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 1999, M.S. in computer science at the University of Massachusetts in 2002, and his Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Massachusetts in 2005. His general research interests are in the modeling, implementation, and evaluation of distributed systems, operating systems, and storage systems. Urgaonkar's current research efforts comprise the design of power-efficient enterprise-scale data centers with a focus on the role of operating systems virtualization and solid-state memory in such systems. A second research effort is concerned with the design of large-scale storage systems that allow flexible trade-offs between performance, availability, and data security. Finally, he is also exploring solutions to the increasingly important problems of accountable monitoring of activities and resource usage of applications hosted in emergent cloud computing environments.
Urgaonkar was the co-organizer of the First Workshop on Integrating Solid-State Memory in the Storage Hierarchy (WISH 2009), co-located with ACM ASPLOS 2009. He was the Web and Publicity Chair for the Third IEEE International Conference on Workload Characterization (IISWC 2007). He has co-authored papers that won the best student paper awards at the Sixteenth Annual Meeting of the IEEE International Symposium on Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (MASCOTS 2008) and the International Conference on Autonomic Computing (ICAC) 2005. He is or has been on the program committee of the ACM Interational Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems (ASPLOS 2009), the ACM International Conference on Measurement and Modeling of Computer Systems (SIGMETRICS 2008), IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2008, 2009), and the Twenty Sixth International Symposium on Computer Performance, Modeling, Measurements, and Evaluation (Performance 2007), among others. Urgaonkar is a member of the ACM, IEEE, and USENIX.
