Brandon Unger Named Computer Science Student Marshal
Brandon Unger of Worthington, PA, was selected as the computer science student marshal during spring commencement ceremonies to be held May 15, 2009 at the Bryce Jordan Center. He selected John Hannan, associate professor of CSE, as his faculty marshal.
A computer science major with a minor in math, Unger received numerous scholarships and awards including the College of Engineering Scholarship, Academic Excellence Scholarship (Schreyer Honors College), New Economy Scholarship (PHEAA), Employee Peer-to-Peer Award (Lockheed Martin Corp.), Engineering Scholars Award (Lockheed Martin Corp.), Evan Pugh (Junior/Senior) Award, President Sparks Award, and the President's Freshman Award.
Unger completed a five year Integrated Undergraduate Graduate program through the Schreyer Honors College and obtained an M.S. in computer science and engineering. The title of his thesis was "Comprehensive Spatial Query Containment Framework for Minimizing Redundancy." He was a Scholar at the Schreyer Honors College.
He was involved in many activities at Penn State including serving as a member of the Penn State Chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery (2004-09) . He served in various capacities for the Schreyer Honors College such as a member of their Student Council (2004-06) and a Student Mentor/Orientation Leader (2005-06). At CSE, Unger served as a student representative on the Curriculum Committee (2008-09), was a graduate teaching assistant (2008-09), and a researcher for the CSE Pervasive Data Access Group (2006-09). He was a Microsoft Student Partner (2008-09). Most recently, Unger was a Student Envoy for the College of Engineering Open House in 2009.
Unger's career at Penn State also included participation in the College's cooperative-education program with experience at Allegheny Ludlum Corporation as a systems developer intern (2005-06), Lockheed Martin Corporation as a software engineering intern (2007), and Microsoft Corporation as a software development engineer intern (2008).
After graduation, he plans to begin his career as a software development engineer at Microsoft Corporation.
