VPN for CSE Network

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is now offering a remote access VPN service. The service is very similar to the ITS VPN service, commonly known as Penn State Anywhere, and uses the same client software.

 Why Use the CSE VPN?

The CSE VPN service provides a secure connection between a remote location and CSE networks. It will also provide a secure connection to other University networks as well. However, it does not apply to traffic with a destination of a non-CSE or non-PSU network.

Using the CSE VPN will provide access to otherwise inaccessible resources and services from a remote location. Below is a short list of resources that will be available by using the CSE VPN.
  • Home directory access
    • Home directory access will be available by a windows share or by samba.
    • Mounting home directories via NFS will not be permitted.
  • Printing
    • Printing will be permitted for Faculty members to print to their office networked printer only.
  • Workstation remote access
    • All protocols for remote access will be permitted. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
      • Remote Desktop Protocol
      • Apple remote desktop
      • SSH
      • NOTE: SSH connections will be allowed without the use of the CSE VPN from PSU IP Addresses only. SSH Connections from outside of PSU will require use of the CSE VPN Service. Exceptions to this policy will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Criteria for exception requests are listed below:
        • The exception request must be sent to helpdesk@cse.psu.edu by a Faculty member.
        • A detailed rationale for the exception must be included in the request.
        • Exceptions are subjet to approval by IT Support and the Computer Science and Engineering Department Head.
  • PSU Traffic
    • While connected to the CSE VPN a remote user will be able to access global Penn State resources. For example, with a CSE VPN connection a user will be able to check their PSU mail and access PASS space without having to disconnect from the CSE VPN and connect to the University VPN (ISPtoPSU).
  • All other traffic will be implicitly allowed. Any future changes to the VPN connection policy will be communicated to CSE users.

Who can use the CSE VPN Service?

Any individual who has a Computer Science and Engineering Account

Getting Started

In order to use the CSE VPN services the following is needed:
  • A CSE User Account
  • Cisco VPN Client software

The Cisco VPN Client software will need to be installed and configured on the user's machine. Please refer to the documents below for guides regarding client software download availability, installation, and configuration. If you currently have a Cisco VPN Client only the CSE profile is needed. Information on importing a profile can also be found below.
