CSE Computer Accounts

CSE computer accounts are created for qualified CSE students. To acquire a CSE computer account, complete the 'Computer Science and Engineering Computer Account Application' form. These forms are available in 342F IST. Once complete, they can be submitted to Barbara Einfalt in 111D IST or to the Admin Staff in 342G IST.

Student accounts will be governed in accordance with PSU Policy AD20, and other related policies found in GURU. Here follow some links to many computer-related policies, guidelines, and laws that apply to CSE computer accounts. Note that the University does not make all policies available electronically.

Account Storage Quotas

Graduate CSE computer accounts will be allotted 1GB for personal use and  coursework.  Space to store research data is provided by your faculty adviser. Please store all research related files in your research storage.

Undergraduate CSE computer account disk space allotment will be 512MB.

Account Printing Quotas

Each semester, CSE account holders are allotted a print quota of 200 pages.  The quota applies to all printers located in instruction labs (rooms 116, 117, 118, 119, 218, 220, 222).  A running tally of pages printed appears on the separator sheet on each print job.
NOTE: Printers in rooms 116, 117, 118, 119, 218, 220,and 222 are for course work only.  All printing not directly related to course work must be printed elsewhere.   Researchers should print on printers provided by advising/sponsoring faculty in specific research labs.

Account Retention Policy

The following is a definition of account types and respective retention periods.

Undergraduate Student Accounts

Students that complete the CSE Undergraduate program and graduate with a CMPSC or CMPEN degree will have their accounts maintained on the CSE systems for a period of 6 months after graduation.  This 6-month period is to assist recent graduates with their job hunting.  Additionally, it is expected that the graduates will use the 6-month period to transfer important files stored on their CSE home directory space to other storage.  All home directory storage will be purged when accounts are removed from the system after the 6-month period. The CSE Department Head, or an advising faculty member must request exceptions.

Undergraduate students departing the CSE program due to failure to meet grade standards or because of disciplinary actions will have their accounts removed immediately upon departure from CSE.  All home directory storage will be purged when accounts are removed from the system.  The CSE Department Head, or the Director of Academic Affairs must request exceptions.

Undergraduate students voluntarily leaving the CSE program will have their accounts removed immediately upon departure from CSE. All home directory storage will be purged when accounts are removed from the system. The CSE Department Head, or an advising faculty member must request exceptions.

Undergraduate CSE majors will be allotted 500 MB of disk quota on network accessible storage.  The storage is fully backed-up.

Non-CSE undergraduate student accounts will be allotted disk quota based on course enrollment.

Graduate Students

Students completing the CSE Graduate program with an MS or PhD degree will have their accounts maintained on the CSE systems for a maximum of 2 years.  A graduate may request that his/her account be terminated prior to the 2 year anniversary of graduation.  Upon request, the department of CSE will maintain email forwarding service for up to 3 years after account termination.  To use these services, graduates must keep current contact information on file with the department of CSE.  Accounts without current contact information will be terminated.  The accounts are considered CSE Alumni accounts.  Any CSE Alumni account that has not been accessed for 30 days will be automatically disabled.  CSE Alumni accounts offer email, web, and limited storage services to CSE alumni.

Affiliated Student Accounts

Accounts may be created for PSU students who are neither enrolled in CSE courses nor pursuing a CSE degree.  These accounts are intended for students who collaborate with CSE faculty on research or teaching matters.  For example, an EE student may be involved in any number of CSE research or teaching projects.  A CSE faculty member who is responsible for an affiliated student’s activities in the CSE department must request affiliated student accounts.  The accounts are granted on a semester basis.  Sponsoring faculty must process requests for continuation of Affiliated Student Accounts each semester.

Affiliated student accounts will be allotted 50 MB of disk quota on network accessible storage.  It is expected that faculty advisors/sponsors provide for storage needs beyond the initial 50MB home directory quota.

Faculty

Faculty accounts are created upon completion of new faculty processing.  When a new faculty member joins CSE, administrative, payroll, and HR forms must be processed.  One of the forms is an account creation request.  The Administrative Assistant to the Department Head collects the forms.  The Administrative Assistant will then request the new account by emailing the appropriate information to helpdesk@cse.psu.edu.

A departing faculty member’s account will remain active indefinitely (unless the reason for departure is termination for disciplinary reasons).  Departing faculty accounts and storage will be deleted upon request from the departing faculty member or from the Department Head.

Staff

CSE staff accounts are created upon completion of new hire processing.  When a new staff member joins CSE, administrative, payroll, and HR forms must be processed.  One of the forms is an account creation request.  The Administrative Assistant to the Department Head collects the forms.  The Administrative Assistant will then request the new account by emailing the appropriate information to helpdesk@cse.psu.edu.

A departing staff member’s account will remain active for 6-months after departure (unless the reason for departure is termination for disciplinary reasons).  Departing staff accounts and storage may be deleted at any time prior to the completion of the 6-month period upon request from the departing staff member or the manager of the departing staff member.

Visiting Scholars

Accounts may be created for visiting scholars.  Visiting scholar accounts are created upon request from the Administrative Assistant to the Department Head.  Visiting scholar access will be limited to the resources needed to conduct their work with the sponsoring faculty.  Visiting scholar accounts and storage will be deleted upon the scholar’s departure from CSE. The accounts are granted on a semester basis.  Sponsoring faculty must process requests for continuation of Visiting Scholar Accounts each semester..

Courtesy Accounts

Accounts may be created to accommodate system use on an as-needed basis.  Courtesy account requests must be submitted to Information Technology Management.  The request will be reviewed and discussed with the Department Head.  System privileges, account duration, and quotas will be determined based on account purpose.  Courtesy accounts are considered a privilege that can be rescinded at the discretion of Information Technology Management.  An account created for a visiting presenter is an example use of a courtesy account.

System Accounts

System accounts may be created and maintained for Information Technology use.  These accounts are used for system administration activities, and are created at the discretion of Information Technology Management.
