PSU Department of Computer Science and Engineering Highlights

 

  • The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was created when the Department of Computer Science and the Computer Engineering Program (which was originally part of the Department of Electrical Engineering) merged in 1993.

  • The fastest growing department in the College, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers B.S., M.S., M.Engr., and Ph.D. programs. Spring 2005 erollment included 411 undergraduate students with fifth-semester standing and above and 186 graduate students.

  • Enrollment in the degree program is highly competitive with very strict admission control.

  • During the 2004-05 school year, 80+ undergraduate students received scholarships.

  • Students may earn a B.S in either computer science or computer engineering. A graduate degree is granted in computer science and engineering.

  • There are 30 tenure track faculty in the department and a complement of fixed-term instructors teaching computer science and engineering.

  • One faculty member was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

  • One faculty member appointed as Evan Pugh Professor.

  • Faculty members have been named Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), and the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR).

  • One faculty member was awarded the University Distinguished Professor in the College of Engineering in Spring 1999.

  • A faculty member received a PSES Distinguished Service Award in Spring 2005.

  • One faculty member received a Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship in 1998. Four faculty members have been awarded National Science Foundation Early Career Development Awards during the last five years.

  • The department spends over $1.4 million annually on research endeavors.

  • Professors specialize in research areas such as architecture, computational molecular biology, computational theory, computer applications, and software systems.

  • One student received the Co-Op Education Student of the Year Award in 2005.

  • Five students were nominated for the Professional Internship Student of the Year Award in 2005.

  • One student was awared the Graduate Assistant Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2005.

  • One student was awared the prestigious Gates-Cambridge Fellowship Award in 2005.

  • Students can participate in organizations such as the Association for Computing Machinery, the IEEE Computer Society, and the Eta Kappa Nu chapter of IEEE.

  • Students utilize the latest technology in their classes, including a state-of-the-art instructional lab that houses 50 Sun Ray Terminals, and an instructional lab dedeicated to CSE hardware courses that includes 15 student stations that are equipped with the latest Hewlett Packard test equipment and analyzers.
