With Apache and mod_perl, several alternative back-ends now exist which offer greater flexibility and scalability than the traditional password and group files. Authentication handlers are available for directory services like DCE, NIS, and SMB, as well as databases systems like Oracle, Informix, and mySQL. Users are free to interface with non-traditional authentication sources and invent their own authentication schemes beyond basic or digest.
